Thank You Westside!

Thank you Westside Family for an amazing Step Out & Serve Day!

We had nearly 700 people serving at 22 project sites around the city. We invested more than $20,000 of our missions dollars making a meaningful and significant impact in our community.

Our goal was to live out Matthew 5:16 and by God’s grace we did! What a beautiful witness to see the body of Christ come together to serve. Thank you for serving our community in Jesus’ name, expecting nothing in return. You are appreciated!

Did you know that it has been reported there were 6,200 volunteers registered to serve from 30 churches!?!

Matthew 5:16
"In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

We hope you enjoy the pictures contained in the posts below. It's always true - pictures do speak a thousand words! If you'd like to post a general comment or a comment about your experience at a project site, please do!

Starting the Day

We kicked off the day with an amazing morning of worship and Pastor Jim Moorhead preaching. The action moved to the parking lot for check-in, lunches & bottled water and bus loading!

A special thanks goes out to all those who worked behind the scenes to help make the morning run like a well-oiled machine! (Pat Duff, Alice & George Waller, Camille & Randy Walker, Donna Horn, Mark Ruby & the entire Westside Facilities Team)

Children's Respite Center

Children's Respite Center

www.crccomaha.org

Site Leader & Bus Captain: Wanda Meador

This is a great God story about a team being just where He needed them to be!

From site leader, Wanda:

To recap our Step Out adventure at the Children's Respite Care Center, we had 13 adults and 2 children. About half had not been on our team last year so Tracy Wright, CRC Director, shared their information video with us again. Our tasks included turning and re-positioning the mulch on the back playground and trimming tree branches in the front playground. We did some touch-up painting throughout the building, put up several bulletin boards, scrubbed walls, cleaned tables and chairs, washed windows, vacuumed floors, dusted mini-blinds and generally helped clean and organize a classroom. (Since the CRC has been without a regular housekeeper staff person the last few months this was a big help to them.)

Compassion in Action (Site 1)

Compassion in Action
6119 Florence Blvd
www.compassioninactioninc.com

Site Leader: Joy Soby with Compassion in Action
Bus Captain: Keith & Kelly Toole

Compassion in Action is a ministry serving women who have been incarcerated. They intentionally don't call their home a "half-way house" but rather the "all the way home house".

Just like Compassion in Action Team #2, this team got on the bus & pretty much went in "blindly", knowing their marching orders for the day were waiting for them. The pictures show the team jumped in to get the job done!

Compassion in Action (Site 2)

Compassion in Action (CIA)
5710 Sargent St.
www.compassioninactioninc.com

Site Leader: Joy Soby with Compassion in Action
Bus Captain: Tammy Day

This community group team of 84 kids & adults was so large it took 2 buses to get them to the project site! God has been expanding the CIA ministry with the recent purchase of a new property. While the purchase price was inexpensive, the work required to get it into shape is no small order!

The team bravely got on the bus & pretty much went in "blindly", knowing their marching orders for the day were waiting for them. The work was unbelievable!

With a project this large it would be easy to say "we didn't finish it all" ... but doing so would miss the beauty of contributing as the body of Christ to an effort that so clearly honors God. This team is appreciated for giving it everything they had & doing all they could in such a short afternoon!

Site Leaders: Kris & Dave Nickelson
Bus Captain: Coleen Freeman

A recap from Kris:
Members of the Military were invited to join in an afternoon of entertainment, food, and fun. The day was planned around showing these military members they were appreciated. The entertainment group the Avi8ors sang and danced while a full meal was served to those who attended. Carnival type games and bounce houses were on hand for the kids and prizes were given out to everyone. Our volunteers cooked hamburgers, hotdogs, cut up watermelon, mixed lemonade, prepared plates, set up tables, decorated tables and the room, set up games and prizes, they also cleaned all of those items up as well! The most wonderful and important thing that our precious volunteers did was interact with the families that attended and blessed them with their time, appreciation, and caring ways. Even though there weren't many families in attendance, our prayer is that God allowed many seeds to be planted.

Step Out was even more than our official serve day on August 24! A team of volunteers manned the doors at HyVee to sell $5 & $10 bags of groceries to fill the Mission For All Nations food pantry.

Did you know Mission For All Nations is the largest food pantry serving the state of Nebraska?

We received the following note from Mary Anaya, Executive Director of Mission For All Nations:

I just wanted to tell you that your volunteers were all awesome. Our store manager was so pleased. We sold 50% more than at that store last year in spite of talk of recession. I hope all of the volunteers enjoyed it and will participate again next year. Please tell them how great they did.

Thanks for all your hard work. I appreciate you!

Nebraska Skilled Nursing Center

Nebraska Skilled Nursing Center
7410 Mercy Road

Site Leaders & Bus Captains: Tiffany & Ryan Bergh

A recap from Tiffany: The mission of our team was to visit every person that wanted to be visited and serve them a Diet Root Beer float with a smile and conversation. In addition, we played an intense game of BINGO. Craig Bunck and his wonderful assistants lead us as we played many games and got to bless folks with gifts and prizes. Our people were blessed probably more than the residents. We heard great stories of the past and about the lives of the residents. It was awesome to see children and adults interacting with the elders of our city. Giving them the gift of time and touch. Everyone had a great time. There’s even talk of doing a blanket give away at Christmas time. (The blankets were the sought after prize. We want everyone to have one!)

This dedicated team of people
- painted the exterior of the house (3 beautiful colors)
- painted the deck in the backyard
- built a brand new deck on the front of the house

A note from Charlie:
Our group power washed, scrapped, caulked, primer coated, and painted the exterior and back deck. Bill Black is close to finishing the front new deck. We had a very hard working team. I was extremely impressed with the teenagers. We could not have achieved our goal without those "young legs" going up and down those ladders all afternoon. The look on Marilyn's face after finishing the work was our blessing!

Southview Assisted Living

Southview Assisted Living

Our singles group took their job of creating an afternoon of blessing for the residents very seriously! This wildly fun, energetic group not only blessed the residents with visits, games & prizes but adopted a very special man by furnishing his room (he was previously homeless and owned nothing). They were so impressed by the need to love the elderly as Jesus does, they've committed to going back once a month!

Project Gideon

Sometimes things just don't happen like we think we will. I received permission to make this post from Judy & Richard, site leaders for the Omaha Baptist Center. I believe it's an inspiring God story, a reminder to all of us that while it's always an option to quit, change our mind or backout ... it is a faith adventure to follow after God.

I've dubbed the Omaha Baptist Center site as Project Gideon. Will you join this army?
Enjoy!

email excerpt from Judy:

I got your email this morning but knew we were going to the Baptist Center this evening so thought I would wait to reply. We met with Charles McLain and Mark (didn't catch his last name).

Good news: A group from Kansas City came up and did the inside work.

Not so good news: Huge amount of work needs to be done to correct their drainage problems. We discussed putting up a retaining wall. Charles made the comment that you wanted something that needed a big crew so he thought this would be a great project! I am not sure what Charles and Mark thought after our visit. Rich told them we knew nothing about this kind of problem (that he worked in a hospital lab). I just took pictures :) and of course occasionally interjected a comment.

As we were driving home from the Baptist Center, Rich and I were wondering what God was thinking when he prompted Rich to volunteer for this project. It was a "little" more than shoving some dirt up against a foundation and the inside organization was not needed. We are sure there were much more qualified people than us. We were thinking about how we could have probably put together a health fair, something we may be a little familiar with. Or helped with the root beer social.... but this is way out of our league.

Then I remembered Gideon and how God kept reducing the size of his army so that victory would be known to be from God and not man. So for us to lead this project, what a way for God to show His work and victory!! And we are excited to be doing this.

We will definitely need to find some people who have a little expert ice in the area of landscaping and also water drainage. Also, to make the job more feasible we will also try to find someone with a Bobcat or something. It is a little early for us to put a number of people we will need but I don't think the number 30 that you had originally "assigned" will be too many even without having to do any inside work.

As far as cost goes, Charles said they do have some money budgeted for this. I think Rich and I were still a little stunned at the time so we will need to meet with them again once we have done a little research and found some "expert" advisors. (So, do you know any?)

I did calculate how much dirt would cost at $1.49 per bag of top soil at HyVee. To back fill in behind the wall will take about 1000 square feet - so that would be $1490...just kidding, I'm sure we can find some free dirt!

There will be substantial work to be done before the 24th. Anyway, give us a few days and we will have some more answers but do keep us in your prayers.

It does matter!

I received a voicemail from Carrie Kees yesterday. She made contact with Southview Heights to develop her Step Out plan of action. As she talked with the director, the conversation went toward their raised vegetable garden.

Last year the Step Out Team built an amazing raised vegetable garden for the residents. The fall of 2007 was filled with inclement weather & the new garden didn't get dirt.

Fast forward to this spring ... our devoted site leader from last year (Donna Horn) created a follow-up team to get the dirt in the garden and to plant the crop for this year.

Carrie told me the Southview Heights Director was near tears as she explained the residents harvested their very first zucchini. The garden is flourishing, the residents are thrilled and God is glorified!

It was a beautiful reminder to me that what we do for the Kingdom really matters. Just ask any resident of Southview Heights!

Give me the hardest project you have!

Shawn Nelson contacted me, wanting to adopt the "hardest" project we had. It didn't take me long to offer him the Prince of Peace (future) Community Center. This church was (literally) given a home & the project is to transform the home into a Community Center.

True to his word, Shawn visited with Pastor Smart and developed a Step Out plan of action. Shawn is MOTIVATED and looking for others to join his team to transform a dream into reality for Prince of Peace Church. I have to tell you I LOVE to see how God "connects" people & projects to get His work done.

If you want an action-packed Step Out day, putting your skills to work, this is the site for you! Check out Shawn's work list:

· Remove and replace about a dozen or so masonry blocks on the foundation. The back porch needs to be raised up before setting the new block into place.

· Cap off a tub water and drain supply. Pastor Smart wants to completely remove the tub.

· About 6 people or so who can cut and either screw down or run an air nailer to put down 5/8 plywood material.

· 1 person who can confidently remove and install a new vinyl window or 2 people who would like to learn how.

· 1 or 2 people to install a kitchen base cabinet, with a premade counter top to go on it. Will need to be able to cut out for a sink, then install the sink and hook it up.

· The same 2 people as above can remove another counter top and replace it as well

· Someone who can lay a vinyl floor (It will be the type of floor that does not require glue)

· Remove a bathroom vanity & replace with a new sink. Same folks can remove & install a toilet.

· Someone to hang a few cabinet doors and fix another one.

· 1 person to remove some paneling (5ft x 7 ft) and install new drywall, mud and tape. This same person can fix another hole in the kitchen

· 2 people to remove and install a new steel pre-hung entry door – basic skills

· 1 person who can remove and install about 15 light fixtures

· 1-2 people who can remove and replace several sections of vinyl siding

· 2 people who can remove 5 4x4 posts in the basement and reinstall with metal adjustable screw post to support the floor of the house

· 1 person to install a wood railing upstairs ( about 5 feet long ) and install some along the steps going up ( about 4 feet long)

· 1 new door slab installed, (cut in for hinges and door handle) This is an odd ball size door 19.

· 8 people to paint!

Updated! Good Deeds (Site Listings)

Updated 8/20/08!

Which good deed does God have in mind for you?
We have an exciting line-up of project sites this year! Our prayer has been that God would lead us to those in need and He has done just that.

Hello from Dan (Mission for ALL Nations)

Hi! I'm Dan Moresette and new to Westside so you may not know me. After retiring from Union Pacific last May I began volunteering my time at Mission For All Nations in South Omaha doing some remodeling projects and working on days they have their food pantries helping with food distribution.

You may not know that but Mission for All Nations is the largest food pantry in Nebraska serving hundreds of needy families each year with food, household items and clothing along with holding many other community activities.

Because of my relationship with the Mission, I have taken on three Step Out projects. The main food pantry building needs painting which comprises most of the work, we need to build a small retaining wall about 30' long and install railing and lattice on a porch. So if you're good with a paint roller/brush (well you really don't need to be that good), enjoy building walls or have some carpentry skills, please join me at the Mission for Step Out 2008.

And if you have a lot of spare time like I do these days, we are having a paint prep day on Aug 16 from 9am - 11am to ensure we can finish all the painting on the 24th.

If you have any questions about these projects or the needs of the team, please call me at 981-7867 or you can email at dansred911@aol.com.

Thanks in advance for joining my team and helping Mission For All Nations.............serving till Jesus comes!

Skilled Workers Needed!

If you are ready to serve & have special handyman or handy-woman skills (carpentry, jack-hammering blacktop, laying new concrete & loads of other stuff, we need to know you by name for special site sign-up! DON'T BE SHY! Please contact me for more information.
